Does WaiverSharks have a tall guy fetish? Umm. No.
But after last week, adding 6’ 11” Washington Nationals reliever Jon Rauch to The Cage, we follow it up with another mountain of a man - Jeff Niemann.
At 6’ 9” he certainly has that Randy Johnson look going, but thankfully he has only a low 90’s fastball, not a mid 90’s mullet (anymore).
He also no longer sports the Dan Haren beard he had last spring either – a good call. On off days, hanging out in the Tampa Bay area looking like Cat Stevens or Yusuf Islam, or whatever the heck he goes by these days would have been itchier than Dick Cheney’s trigger finger.
Niemann’s next start is against the hot hitting Chicago White Sox, and his stay may not be long term at this point of season, as both Matt Garza and Scott Kazmir are due back towards the end of April which could force him back to the minors.
However if Andy Sonnanstine, the Rays current third starter, continues to be better at playing ping pong than throwing a baseball, Big Jeff just might be playing alongside Evan Longoria awhile longer.
Is Andy Sonnanstine a better ping pong player than a pitcher?
