The Shallow
James Loney – First Base
First base is such a tricky position.
Generally fantasy pundits commit this position to big, burly rocket launching, power mongers. Unfortunately for James Loney, that just isn’t his style. It isn’t that power isn’t there, but that has never really been his trademark.
Loney will provide an average that hovers around the .300 mark, good power to the gaps of the vast outfield of Dodger Stadium, and a bonus of 10-15 steal potential. All neatly packaged in a product that doesn’t strike out too much. Heck, even Snoop Dogg appears to think Loney is MONEY!
While this isn’t your prototypical first baseman, should you be so lucky to have a power bat in your line-up from another infield position, perhaps you can spend a roster spot on Loney - who is blessed with a very talented line-up around him.
Projected to hit in the six slot of a deep Dodger attack, Loney will get plenty of chances to cash in guys like Ramirez, Ethier and Martin that swing ahead of him, and at only 24, his best seasons are certainly still ahead of him.
The Deep
Ryan Perry – Relief Pitcher
Hmmm, a Tiger pitcher?
Many feel a cold shiver run down their back when hearing those two words next to each other when talking fantasy. However, there are actually a couple of options on the Tigers roster worthy of a mention, and last years’ first round pick is one such option. Perry could re-ignite some excitement in even the most cynical Tigers fan.
With above average goods, the Tigers couldn’t send this kid down to AAA as he has a major league arm now, and is ready for the challenge. With the bullpen in shambles, the Tigers may have their future closer perform a brief audition prior to handing over the ball to him by mid-season, even with Joel Zumaya’s potential return around the same time.
Perry’s arm is not dependent solely on throwing the flaming cheese across the dish. He’s got a mean slider that is just downright nasty.
When it comes to closing games, it’s partially a matter of a pitchers mental state, and with Rodney and Zumaya failing heavily in those auditions along with the baggage that Brandon Lyon brings with him, why not pass the ball to the kid, and let him run with it?
Deep fantasy leaguers should pick him up now, because when Perry finally gets the opportunity, it will surely be too late.

“Joel Zumaya’s potential return” That phrase is getting old. That guys gonna rot away on the DL. Such a waste.
