Dorsal of the DayLast year the Chicago Cubs gave us a glimpse of their back stop future as they featured Geovany Soto – who promptly hit .389 in 18 games in 2007 - and has now become one of the best Fantasy catchers in Major League Baseball in 2008.

Are we perhaps witnessing the San Francisco Giants version of Mr. Soto by way of the stalky switch hitting Pablo Sandoval? Hmmm…only time will tell.

Pablo SandovalPablo Sandoval has been raking since being called up on August 14th. The question that now exists – where should the Giants play him?

Sandoval has already become the NL’s consummate Fantasy catching Swiss Army knife as he’s played not only catcher – but also is being experimented at both first base as well as third base.

That useful position versatility may make him an ideal 2nd Catcher for your Fantasy playoff run.

NOTE: The Giants have Bengie “Mo’ Money” Molina signed on for one more year in San Francisco – so catching duties may not be in Sandoval’s immediate future as a Giant – but if the big Venezuelan can continue to hit like he has in his first month in the big leagues – fire up the kayaks in McCovey Cove – ‘cause the Giants will most definitely find a place for Sandoval in their power starved lineup.

WaiverSharks.com just hopes he plays enough games in the C spot – enabling him to retain catcher eligibility for most Fantasy leagues in 2009.

Dorsal of the DayPoor Pittsburgh Pirates fans have certainly not had a lot to cheer about yet again this baseball season. And - with the recent trade that sent Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte to the Yankees many of the Buccos season ticket holding faithful wouldn’t be called out if they tossed their remaining PNC Park tickets into the Allgheny River.

But hold onto your Primanti’s sandwich Pittsburgh ! Before you go on a river litter tirade that could fill Matt Capps pants – some help may be on the way!

Andrew McCutchen

The Pirates system has long been touting both 1B/OF - Steven Pearce who was recently recalled - as well as this future 30/30 man – Andrew McCutchen.

The sudden - and unexpected rise of young Nate McLouth may have contributed to McCutchen’s added minor league tenure.

But with the Pirates apparently finally deciding to say “uncle” last week, as trade deadline sees them once again wearing the “sellers” hat - it shouldn’t be much longer before Pirates fans – and Fantasy baseball communities catch a glimpse of the speed/power combo that has crossers of the Roberto Clemente Bridge grinning anxiously.

Keeper leagues and NL ONLY leagues need to shark this potential 5 tool wonder as soon as he’s added to your leagues wire.

Mixed leagues may want to wait and see how well he adapts to the majors – but adding a speedster with McCutchen’s bat potential shouldn’t be hemmed and hawed too long.

The season is fast approaching playoff time - and this may be the best offensive option outside of Clevelands Matt LaPorta to land a player who could have immediate impact this year.

So, unless you’re sitting in the cat bird seat waiting for LaPorta or Tampa Bay ’s phenom starter in the wings - David Price - utilize that high waiver priority you’re clinging to – especially if you could use some stretch run steals!

Dorsal of the DayKnock Knock. Whose there?

OPPORTUNITY !

Boston ’s Julio Lugo has landed on the DL with a buggered left quadricep.

Now - if you have Rollins, Hanley or Reyes, you are not watching this scenario with much interest. But as for the rest of us – take note.

This opens up a chance for Red Sox Triple-A Pawtucket prospect Jed Lowrie - who may conceivably stick for good in the big leagues considering Lugo hasn’t exactly set Beantown on fire with his mediocre offence and sub-par defense.

Lowrie and Dustin Pedroia have long been touted as the middle infield combo of the future for the Sox.

If the selective Lowrie can manage regular at bats within the Red Sox potent line-up, he may be worth taking a gamble on – especially since he will be eligible at both 3B and at the increasingly thin SS position.

So - if you’re hunting for a sleeper Fantasy short stop – Jed could become a force to reckon with after the All-Star break.

Jed Lowrie

Dorsal of the DayHappy Fathers Day San Diego!

Top prospect, and June 2nd’s “Bones Pick Up of the Week“, Chase Headley, is FINALLY being called up to the majors!

He will likely man left field – and he has been on a power tear of late down in Triple-A while playing for the Portland Beavers - where he’d hit a home run in each of the past three contests.

Managers in keeper leagues should definitely consider taking a flyer on the San Diego Padre’s power hitting switch-hitter.

Although he may not duplicate what Ryan Braun did last season – he should still - rather ironically - become eligible at both 3B as well as OF in the coming weeks.

Dorsal of the DayThe Arizona Diamondbacks have called up right-hander Max Scherzer.

True Waiver Sharks hear news like this, and wide shark teeth grins form from gill to gill! Especially ones who are involved in long term Keeper Leagues~!

“Mad Max” was off to an incredible start for the Sidewinders. He currently posted an ERA of 1.17 and a 38/3 K/BB ratio while pitching 23 innings for Tucson.

In most likelihood, Sherzer will pitch in the bullpen to begin his career, but it may not take very long for him to enter the rotation. However it should be noted that the D-backs suffer from their own case of “Joba-itis” regarding Scherzer. They need help NOW in the bullpen, and there can be a case said that Scherzer’s electric stuff would make for an amazing closer. We’ll have to just wait and see how this all pans out. But regardless what role he plays – this kid has some nasty stuff!

Max ScherzerAnd it’s been witnessed by scouts that the 98 MPH flamethrower is improving his secondary pitches as well.

Single season mixed leaguers might want to stash him away if possible, based on his great potential – and if Scherzer has not been added to your league yet - a high waiver priority should strongly be considered.
