Okay, you may not always agree with the Fantasy Sports Girl points of view – but it’s frickin’ freezing here just outside of Michigan! So…we figured some of you could use a little break from the February fantasy blues.
Watch a new batch of sexy FSG models discuss preseason fantasy baseball offering a thumbs up or thumbs down approach to who they feel you should keep your eyes on in fantasy baseball heading into 2009.
WaiverSharks will continue to feature the Fantasy Baseball related FSG videos throughout the 2009 season in our FANTASY VIDEOS section in the lower right hand side of our website.
It’s often been said that the key component for a Major League Baseball franchise to win a World Series championship is good solid Starting Pitching.
Is that the case in Fantasy Baseball?
Sort of…but NOT REALLY!
Incredible value can be had from later round Sleeper Starting Pitchers. Only CLOSERS - who tend to experience more CHANGES then a group of chameleon’s below Las Vegas ’ Freemont Street - are a more volatile fantasy group.
IN FACT: We cannot justify selecting the majority of 2009 Starting Pitchers during the first FIVE rounds of ANY Mixed league fantasy baseball draft!
WaiverSharks' suggested strategy is simple -
Try to land ONE pitching stud, and by stud – he doesn’t even have to be in the TOP 10! You do NOT have to come out of the draft gates with guns a blazing for the likes of Johan Santana, Jake Peavy, or C.C. Sabathia to roster an impressive staff!
This has never been more true than in the 2009 Fantasy Baseball season!
Once you have grabbed your one STUD PITCHER - move away from STARTERS until the early middle, then come back again to them in the late rounds. Seriously! Loading up on too many highly regarded/ranked starting pitchers could prove to be a devastating tactic. Many relevant Fantasy pitchers won’t even be drafted…
We guarantee your waiver wire will contain over 30 starters who will not be drafted - who will provide you with enough pitching firepower to win your league's title in 2009.
Having said this – we are going to SKIP over the usual pitcher suspects who will come popping off Draft boards in 2009. And instead list what we feel are the TOP 100 Starting Pitchers you need to DRAFT, or put on your fantasy radars for 2009.
If you don’t know STUDS like Tim Lincecum, Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels are good by now – you need to go visit MMPOPG or Mahjong – because you should not be playing Fantasy Baseball.
So who else “could” THRIVE in ’09? Is there an Edinson Volquez in this bunch?
Who will break out - and who will break down?
Be sure to BOOKMARK us as we examine Deeper and Deeper Sleepers throughout the entire month of December and into the Happy New Year!
SIDENOTE: While reading over our suggestions, you will notice our affection for players who manage to get plenty of strike outs – we feel this is absolutely “key” when hunting for fantasy starting pitching!
Preseason Fantasy Baseball Rankings:
100 STARTERS TO WATCH FOR IN 2009
Here are our (#1 to #20) Starters to watch for in 2009:
1) Rich Harden, Cubs – “I'm sorry, Dick? Excuse me, Rich? Will milk be made available to us?” British Columbia native Rich Harden was only three years old when Judd Nelson muttered those famous words in the John Hughes classic “The Breakfast Club.” Despite his rash of injuries while pitching for the A’s – Harden just turned the MAGIC age of 27 last month.
2) Yovani Gallardo, Brewers – 2008 was lost for Gallardo – we bet it’s found in 2009.
3) Joba Chamberlain, Yankees – Learning to be a pitcher instead of just a hurler takes some time - and patience – but Chamberlain has all the makings of a Fantasy STUD!
4) Justin Verlander, Tigers – What the heck happened in 2008? Verlander’s sophomore slump leaves no where’s to go but up for the hard throwing Tiger.
5) Matt Cain, Giants – Lincecum may be the Jack Morris of the Giants, but Cain should be the Dan Petry. Ode to the 1984 Tigers! Cain is able – but consistency must prevail.
6) Matt Garza, Rays – We love this guys tenacity. The World Series further enhanced his bravado!
7) Brandon Morrow, Mariners – We are not sold on the Mariners – but we are sold on the laser throwing Morrow. Please don’t waste him as your closer Marinerds!
8) Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers – A Star is Born? The Dodgers south paw’s 2008 reminded us of Cole Hamels first year in the bigs – not great – but you can see greatness in the making.
9) Max Scherzer, Diamondbacks – Will be the #1 pitcher in the major leagues this year, of all pitchers with two different colored eyes. Could Strike out a TON of batters in a season once he’s established himself in the D-backs rotation
10) Jair Jurrjens, Braves – The Tigers lost a gem when they “borrowed” Edgar Renteria from the NL for one stinking year. An improved Braves pitching rotation should allow Jurrjens some friendlier pitching match-ups in the coming 2009 season.
11) Ricky Nolasco, Marlins – This kid presumably fell from the sky in 2008 – but he knows how to pitch.
12) Johnny Cueto, Reds – See “Joba Chamberlain" at #3.
13) Tommy Hanson, Braves – The 6’6” Hanson has caught WaiverSharks eye – and his recent performance in the Arizona Fall league should have caught yours!
14) Aaron Harang, Reds – Had an awful 2008. He’s a much better pitcher then last years numbers – so steal him.
15) Chris R. Young, Padres – Picked a fight with Derrek Lee in 2007, then a line drive in 2008. We think if he developed one more pitch he could dominate. Young will have to step it up with Jake Peavy possibly leaving San Diego though.
16) David Price, Rays – He looked as if he could step in and throw 6 to 9 innings of shut out ball when he pitched during the World Series – Thus far, we like what we’ve seen behind curtain number one of “The Price is Right.”
17) Josh Johnson, Marlins – Came back last season from Tommy John – and looked impressive, even appeared to GAIN some velocity in his return.
18) Javier Vasquez, Braves – The move to the National League’s Atlanta Braves should even help to further Javier’s renaissance.
19) Adam Wainwright, Cardinals – Potential ace of the Cardinals staff remains some what under rated - and will slip further down in drafts then he should.
20) Ubaldo Jimenez, Rockies – If he can learn to control his base on balls the ceiling is off the charts for the hard throwing Rockies hurler.
Okay guys - we know the 2009 Major League Baseball season is still a ways away, but we hope we can pry your eyes away from your woman’s annual holiday Victoria ’s Secret catalogue just long enough to go through our exciting Fantasy Baseball Shortstop Rankings.
Ask anyone who has played the game of baseball and they will agree – Shortstop is probably the most important position, outside of your pitcher, on the field. So, more often then not – the demanding defensive skill-set required to man the Shortstop - SS position garners a less then adequate offensive bat. This would explain why Hanley Ramirez and Jose Reyes will generally fly off of 2009 draft boards faster then a flying hush puppy (shoe) hurled at George Bush.
The TOP 10
1)Hanley Ramirez, Florida Marlins – Still “numero uno” for Fantasy - SS
2) Jose Reyes, New York Mets – Monster year could be in store for Jose.
6) Derek Jeter, New York Yankees – Declining numbers – but still worthy.
7) Johnny Peralta, Cleveland Indians – May gain 3B eligibility – enhancing value.
8) Michael Young, Texas Rangers – Always hits. But will he remain a Ranger?
9) J.J. Hardy, Milwaukee Brewers – Has pop in a tough to find power position.
10) Miguel Tejada, Baltimore Orioles – Tejada aged 4 years the last 2 years.
The Next 10
11) Rafael Furcal, LA Dodgers – Rafael Furcal is the Ultimate MLB Shortstop Fantasy Baseball “Sleeper” – that everyone knows about!
12) Jed Lowrie, Boston Red Sox – Yeah we know - this is way too high a ranking for “Honest Jed” - right? But look at all the guys following our bold #12. Really, once the Top 15 or so SS are taken – step up and get ready to play that wacky fantasy game - “Who could be the next Aviles !”
13) Mike Aviles, Kansas City Royals – This guy could!
14) Khalil Greene, St. Louis Cardinals – We wouldn’t bet the farm on it – but a change of scenery – and getting out of Petco Parks Death Star dimensions should help Greene’s overall power numbers – now if he can just manage to bat .260
15) Yunel Escobar, Atlanta Braves – Yunel will lose some multi-position versatility this season – but is still a young SS worthy of some late round love.
16) Orlando Cabrera, Chicago White Sox – Orlando may not excite you – but he is relatively consistent year in and year out – and in an undeniably shallow group of fantasy stars – he shines just a little brighter then the rest of the pack.
17) Felipe Lopez, Arizona Diamondbacks – When the Reds traded away Felipe Lopez a few years back we thought they were nuts – but he certainly hasn’t lived up to his 2005 campaign. Let’s see what he can do in the desert.
18) Edgar Renteria, San Francisco Giants – Renteria’s return to the National League will hopefully give a boost to his mediocre single season stint with the Detroit Tigers in 2008.
19) Ryan Theriot, Chicago Cubs – We originally had mistakenly omitted "The Riot" But Fantasy mangers should definitely not make this mistake. Theriot is coming off his best season, and although he'll do squat for your power numbers - he was ranked in the leagues leaders for multi-hit games in 2008, and should net you 25 or more stolen bases.
20) Emmanuel Burriss, San Francisco Giants – Yeah Yeah we are aware of the Giants signing of old man Renteria – but if Burriss can either grab hold of an opportunity if the injury bug strikes – or find a full time gig elsewhere – he could conceivably steal 40 plus bags. Consider him a Ryan Theriot "Lite"
Shortstop Sleepers
21) Reid Brignac, Tampa Bay Rays - As of today there really is not a lot standing in the way of Reid Brignac getting a legitimate look next Spring Training. Neither Jason Bartlett nor Ben Zobrist possesses the upside of the talented Mr. Brignac.
22) Alcides Escobar, Milwaukee Brewers – Won’t start 2009 with the Brewers – but we could see the speedy Escobar called up during the year. He’ll need to utilize his speed - and improve his base stealing prowess if he wants to land a full time gig in the majors.
23) Christian Guzman, Washington Nationals - "The Guz" had one of his best seasons in 2008 - fittingly it was a contract year - (Shocking!) He'll be part of a mildly improved Nats line-up in 2009 - but we're sceptical of him repeating the numbers he pulled down last season.
24) Clint Barmes, Colorado Rockies – When “Tulo” fell to injury Clint stepped in rather adequately during the Rockies first half of the 2008 season. He currently hasn’t solidified a starting spot in the Rockies line-up. Jeff Baker appears ahead of him at second base – but as we all know 162 games is a marathon – and Barmes has proved that provided he avoids carrying too many groceries up his stairs – he’s a middle infielder who carries a decent stick.
25) Elvis Andrus, Texas Rangers – Andrus won’t see the light of day at Shortstop in Texas as long as the Rangers have All-star Michael Young at the SS helm – but in a few years we could see the Rangers employ this speedster as their everyday man at short.
Note: The Rangers have convinced Michael Young to slide on over to the hot corner in an attempt to give Elvis Andrus a shot at winning the SS spot heading into Spring. After some intitial resistance - and a trade request it appears Young will try and grant the Rangers their third base wish. Hmmm...Stay tuned.
Dynasty League Potentials
Tim Beckham, Tampa Bay Rays – The Rays first overall selection in the 2008 MLB player draft is another solid shortstop - SS prospect. Beckham may actually be moved to the outfield down the road – but regardless he projects as a strong (5X5) five tools candidate in the future.
Gordon Beckham, Chicaco White Sox – Gordon Beckham (no relation to the above mentioned Tim Beckham) is bigger and more powerful then the younger Rays prospect – but he also is in danger of being moved to another position on the diamond when he eventually cracks the bigs – likely second or third base.
Carlos Triunfel, Seattle Mariners – The ultra talented Triunfel may still be a couple years away – but we felt a need to give the Mariners fans some ray of hope. He has an amazing arm – but again, like both the previously mentioned Beckham boys – it remains to be seen if he will stick as a Shortstop once his young body matures.
Before moving on to our Rankings of favorite fantasy 2B Second Basemen for 2009 –
There’s one last First baseman prospect that intrigues the heck out of us – and we hope he gets a shot at the friendly confines of Arlington Ballpark in Texas real soon!
The Texas Rangers STOLE this switch-hitting first baseman in the First Year Player Draft – the video below talks about his comparisons to departed former Ranger Mark Teixeira, as well as future Atlanta Braves Hall of Famer Chipper Jones.
Pretty nice company to be mentioned along with!
Imagine this kid in a line-up along with Josh Hamilton, Chris Davis, a healthy Hank Blalock and Ian Kinsler, Nelson Cruz - and Michael Young to name just a few.
The Texas Rangers are going to need to buy extra balls for batting practice if they keep landing these kinds of big boppers!
WaiverSharks 2009 Preseason
Fantasy Baseball Rankings:
Catchers
Brrrrrrrr!!!
Well, Waiver Sharks -
Only 100 more days until Spring Training!
Okay – as the snow flurries gently cascade outside our window on a chilly November afternoon - It does seem somewhat strange to be gathering together our prognosticating wizardry to help develop a preseason Fantasy Baseball rankings list.
Further wreaking havoc with such an early bird list is the fact that plenty of free agent fish still have their respective agents wheeling and dealing to find them new homes - but let’s not let Scott Boras and Co. ruin our fun!
For those of you who may be new visitors to WaiverSharks.com – we are a website that focuses on Fantasy Sports Baseball – with an emphasis on players that often can be snatched from the consummate waiver wire!
SO – with the cunning of a Hammerhead, and the bite of a Great White – we don’t take the offseason sitting down!
We’ve decided to simply list the TOP 10 Fantasy Baseball Players in the following categories:
Catcher - First base - Second Base -
Short Stop - Third Base – Outfield - Starters
And then we’ll dig in a little deeper.
Ranking the next 10 players - examining them a little bit closer.
(Thus, you could say – this list really BEGINS at #11)
And finally – we give you 5 Sleepers you need to be aware of going into the 2009 season.
Pretty simple – right?
Let’s begin with the almighty back stops - a position that, due to its lack of depth – has suffered through some serious fantasy talent shortages in recent years.
Fear not WaiverSharks – There are indeed Catcher options on the horizon that should provide a boost to your fantasy teams long after V-mart and R-mart have been selected from 2009 fantasy draft boards.
8) Mike Napoli, Anaheim Angels – Napoli turned the magic age of 27 this past Halloween – and managed to hit 20 Homeruns in just 227 at bats last year. A full healthy season could garner sweet numbers!
9) Kelly Shoppach, Cleveland Indians – Not sure how the playing time will be divvied up in the land of Chief Wahoo – but Kelly Shoppach proved he’s something that’s not easy to come by in 2008 - A catcher who can hit – with power!
10) Yadier Molina, St. Louis Cardinals – Is Yada Yada Yada due to overtake brother Bengie in 2009? If the Cards Gold Glover hits the gym this winter with brothers Jose and Bengie, and his power increases – it’s quite possible!
Could be on Waivers - 2009
11) A.J. Pierzynski, Chicago White Sox – The volatile Pierzynski may not be opposing benches (Especially Cubs fans) leading “Lady Byng” candidate – but he often can be had in later rounds – and year after year he delivers numbers that won’t kill you.
12) Chris Iannetta , Colorado Rockies - We love this kid. We just wish Clint Hurdle loved a wider playing time split with Yorvit Torrealba.
13) Pablo Sandoval, San Francisco Giants – Management is saying he may be headed to third base – we don’t care if he pitches – just as long as he rakes like he did last September – and retains catcher eligibility.
14) Chris Snyder , Arizona Diamondbacks – The two Chris’ - Iannetta and Snyder, were added and dropped like Donkey Kong barrels in 2008. More regular playing time would increase values for both.
15) Ramon Hernandez, Cincinnati Reds – The experienced backstop packs his catchers mask and heads to Cincy. This might actually help his overall statistics, and eliminates a Matt Wieters platoon issue, but his best days are still behind him.
16) Ivan Rodriguez , New York Yankees – Pudge or Posada? – Once the pride of Puerto Rico, neither side of this catchers coin gets us overly excited – but, plugged into a Bronx Bombers line-up he could stem off the Hall of Fame induction speech another couple seasons.
(Hey Beavis…he said “Butt Plugged”)
17) Dioner Navarro, Tampa Bay Rays – WaiverSharks had him on the Sleeper radar in our exclusive player ranker “THE CAGE” going into 2008 – and he proved to be quite reliable when healthy – we just wish he carried a little more power in his stick.
18) Jarrod Saltalamacchia , Texas Rangers – Everyone’s jumped off the Salty train – Not us…Not yet. He needs to find regular AB’s – and the Rangers need to deal one of their catchers for some starter help. Jarrod was rumored to be headed to the Red Sox – which would have at least saved money on jersey letters. Pay close attention to what develops during the off season regarding the 3-headed Texas Rangers catching monster.
19) Kurt Suzuki, Oakland Athletics – Kurt is amazing at handling the young Oakland staff – but that doesn’t help you win Fantasy titles. Perhaps the arrival of Matt Holliday in A’s town will help boost Oakland’s anemic offence – well, at least until Mr. Beane pulls more triggers come the 2009 trade deadline.
20) Jorge Posada , New York Yankees – This guy was Top 5 the past few years – but his injuries have knocked him down to a high risk/high reward selection.
Catcher Sleepers – 2009
21) Matt Wieters, Baltimore Orioles – (Above) Matt Wieters has succeeded at every level. This kid is destined for greatness – and we figure it’s time Baltimore Orioles fans had another jersey to consider - besides “Markakis” - but it may require some patience from his Fantasy owners.
22) Jeff Clement, Seattle Mariners – Could be this year’s version of Ryan Doumit. We’re not sure where new skip Don Wakamatsu will play the talented lad – but if he has Catcher eligibility in the league you play – he’s worth taking a gamble on.
23) Taylor Teagarden, Texas Rangers – Playing in Arlington has become the A.L. equivalent of Coors Field – in fact, since the induction of the humidor in Colorado - it’s quite possibly the #1 hitter’s park in Major League Baseball.
24) Jesus Flores, Washington Nationals – Don’t @#@#! with da Jesus!
Sorry, but every fantasy sports website should quote “The Big Lebowski” at least five times a season – for the record – WaiverSharks.com is now sitting at four. Flores should be handed the starting catcher’s reigns in 2009. We’re not saying he’ll walk on water – but he has talent that falls under the radar while playing for the Nats. Incidentally, does anyone know the name of the dance Jesus is doing on his Wikipedia page?
25) Max Ramirez, Texas Rangers – Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski should try and detour the derailed D-Train (Dontrelle Willis) away from Detroit and onto the pitching starved Rangers to try and pry this guy’s power bat away from Arlington .
Chances are that won’t happen – but we liked what we saw of Maximiliano (That’s his full first name – imagine if his last name was Saltalamacchia!) in the limited role he was allowed to play in 2008.
Side Note: 2010 is a ways away, but again – WaiverSharks.com is committed to keeping you ahead of your competition!
Three Catching prospects Dynasty leaguers should pay some attention to are:
Philadelphia Phillies - Lou Marson - Appears to be the Phillies catching future.
Atlanta Braves - Tyler Flowers - A key cog in the Jake Peavy deal being at an impasse.
Toronto Blue Jays - J.P. Arencibia– (Youtube - Below) If J.P. remains a catcher he has the batting skill to one day be a solid fantasy asset.
2009 Preseason First Base
Fantasy Baseball Rankings
are on deck!
Did you say you were not aware that Jake Peavy and Matt Holliday are on the move?
Shame Shame Shame!!!
But - WaiverSharks forgives you!
Fantasy Baseball takes a bit of a back seat to Fantasy Football this time of year – but we want to keep you up to date - so that next year when PITCHERS AND CATCHERS begin to report to 2009 spring training - you are not the person asking your fantasy “friends” questions like:
“When did Mike Jacobs go to the Royals!?”
SO TO HELP A LITTLE - Like the sign says…
WaiverSharks.com is currently hard at work - putting together a 2009 Preseason Fantasy Baseball Players Rankings List!
It’s NEVER too early to get a jump on the shark infested waters of Fantasy Baseball!
Only catch – our list begins at #11!
(Not to be confused with Spinal Tap’s amp – “These go to eleven”)
SURE - we will list the Top 10 picks we see coming off of many draft boards for the C/1B/2B/SS/3B/OF positions – but we will delve a little deeper into what WaiverSharks truly is focused on – the potential waiver wire gems and later round Fantasy pick-ups that can be made long after A-rod and Albert & Jose and Hanley have instantly been inserted into our 2009 Fantasy baseball line-ups.
Within each position category we will also discuss 5 Sleepers
(SPOILER WARNING: some of which will be fairly deep!)
So, all you early birds who might be enjoying the Fantasy Football rise of Tennessee Titan running back Chris Johnson or the fall of Denver’s RB - Ryan Torain – but still want to keep Fantasy Baseball on your collective radars – Waiver Sharks is the place to visit in the coming months!
Buster Posey and Madison Bumgarner are the kind of players that should make a truly dedicated Waiver Shark begin humming the ominous theme to the 1975 Spielberg classic “Jaws”
Perhaps a year, or two away from their big league call ups – we feel it still necessary to make you aware that these diamonds in the rough could become very valuable fantasy commodities – “soon”
Let’s start off by saying – Buster Posey – Is a fantastic baseball name!
We did some research by the way - and there is no relation to Indie film star Parker Posey.
But in May 2008, while playing for the Florida State Seminoles Buster Posey played his own version of “House of Games” – as he played ALL 9 positions in a seven inning contest - including a two out stint as a pitcher in which he struck out both batters he faced.
And oh, did we mention – he also hit a grand slam?
Can you imagine if he’d done this in the majors and the league you played in only needed 1 game to become eligible at a position – Move over Mark DeRosa! There’s a new Mr. Versatile – and he’s headed to the Bay area – ummm…Soon!
Sorry that we can’t be more specific on the time frame arrivals of these young future Giants stars – but we should have a much clearer picture next year during spring training as to who will be making the jump to “The Show” – and who will need some more seasoning in the minor leagues.
Madison Bumgarner/Tim Alderson
Both lefty Madison Bumgarner and right hander Tim Alderson possess amazing stuff for their age - which will undoubtedly fuel plenty of fantasy hype the next couple years.
Giants fans needn’t fret too much if Brian Sabean fails to net a quality 3rd starter to add to the Tim Lincecum/Matt Cain duo. WaiverSharks feels they already have their man within the organization.
In fact, the Giants actually have TWO potential aces up their sleeves. These guys are only 19 and 20 years old respectively. By the time they finally do crack the majors we expect there could be quite the fervor for their fantasy services.
A Fantasy feeding frenzy if you will (Wow, that was a lot of alliteration!)
So – lock these names in your WaiverSharks memory bank– and we’ll keep you abreast to their development throughout the 2009 season and beyond.
Until then, Go & watch “Jaws” while you wait…Unless, you’re like us – just too darn busy for feature length films…
Why Fantasy Baseball owners need to be aware of what’s cooking with the Giants.
We’ll discuss some San Francisco treats that may just knock your socks off in the next few years - Including last years surprise 3 position wonder – Pablo Sandoval!
Bones is signing off on the 2008 Fantasy Baseball Season, but keep checking back in the off-season for updates on the keepers and sleepers you'll want to watch out for in 2009!
